GINTUIT is for the treatment of “mucogingival conditions” in adults, or conditions in which patients have lost keratinized gum tissue, the thick, pink tissue that normally surrounds and protects teeth and dental implants from the effects of food and tooth brushing, and is important to maintaining good oral health. In patients with minimal gum tissue or receding gums, the absence of this tissue around teeth or implants can lead to an accumulation of plaque, which can cause chronic inflammation and other serious complications, including loss of the tooth or implant.

Once patients lose gum tissue, the condition will not improve on its own and cannot be restored through standard oral hygiene practices. There are a number of surgical procedures that dental specialists use to generate or replace gum tissue, which may include repositioning gum tissue, removing tissue from one part of the mouth to another, or using outside materials to shape a patient’s gums.
One common procedure for restoring keratinized gum tissue is the free gingival graft (FGG), which requires the surgical removal of tissue from the roof of a patient’s mouth (palate) that is then surgically transferred onto the affected area of the gums. This procedure can be painful and the results may not be aesthetically pleasing, since the graft tissue does not always match the gum tissue where it is placed. There also may not be enough palate tissue to treat all of the affected areas in one procedure, so patients may need to undergo multiple surgeries.
However, with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of GINTUIT – the first and only living cell-based product approved by the FDA to generate new gum tissue – patients at Denemark Periodontal Specialists, in Burr Ridge, now have another option.
GINTUIT is a cellular sheet that contains living cells (keratinocytes and fibroblasts), which are known to express cytokines and growth factors (“cell communicators”) that are important for healing and the regeneration of tissue. In essence, GINTUIT is designed to work with the patient’s cells to restore his or her gum tissue to its natural state. GINTUIT is not intended to cover the roots of teeth.
GINTUIT application is an easy procedure, similar to other minor periodontal surgeries. First, Dr. Denemark numbs the affected area with a local anesthetic. Then, he prepares the area that requires more tissue and sutures (sews in) GINTUIT. A common dental dressing may then be placed onto the affected area to protect GINTUIT and keep it in place while the site heals. Patients should expect to see improvement to the area within a few weeks.

Important Safety Information:
GINTUIT should not be used if an active infection is present and when there is a known allergy to bovine collagen. In clinical trials, the most common adverse events reported were nasopharyngitis, respiratory tract infection, sinusitis, and upper respiratory tract infections.
